THE Msunduzi Municipality workers who were seen sitting and sleeping on graves are in hot water.
The municipality in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, said it was in the process of charging them for misconduct and putting the municipality into dispute after photos of them trended on social media.
Msunduzi Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla’s spokesman Zazi Nxele told Daily Sun they would give those implicated a tough disciplinary so no other would do that again.
“This is an embarrassment to the municipality and such behavior is unacceptable. We confirm that these are our workers and processes are in place for implicated employees to be charged for misconduct.
"As black people, we respect graves and no one should disrespect them. We are sure that after the disciplinary action against those who are implicated, no one will ever think to do such an unacceptable act on the graves," said Nxele.
Traditional healer Sazi Mhlongo told Daily Sun the workers had invited unnecessary curses and bad luck on themselves by disrespecting graves.

“In the Zulu culture, people respect graves and they aren't even allowed to put their feet on top of them for the respect of the departed and their families.
“They also invited bad spirits. That is why you often see people being trained to be izangoma but don't succeed because they don't have the real spirit for being ithwasa but it is the bad spirits they took from disrespected graves,” he said.
Mhlongo said some families put strong muthi on their loved ones' graves when they want justice or revenge for their deaths.

“A person who sits or sleeps on those graves might end up with curses that were not directed to then but to the deceased's killers,” he said.
