accreditation

RESIDENTS of Site B in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, have been left shocked after four people were killed in a spaza shop on Tuesday, 7 June.

They told the SunTeam they heard several gunshots at about 7pm and minutes later, cops arrived at the scene.

Others said they had to run for their lives after the shooting started inside Madiba spaza shop.

“I was passing by the shop with my sister when we heard gunshots and saw people running in different directions. We also ran as the shooting continued. There was a lot of gunshots, and it felt like more than two guns were used,” said a resident.

This is one of multiple murders that have taken place in Khayelitsha in the past year, where more than 60 people have died, according to the community development forum’s Ndithini Tyhido.

The shop owner, who was also killed, had moved to the area two weeks ago.

“We are in shock. His shop was the cheapest in the area and people were loving it. We are sad,” said resident Sisipho Ngxingxi (34).

Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed the incident, saying: “Khayelitsha police have opened murder dockets for investigation following an incident where three men were shot dead at the scene. The fourth one died later in hospital.”

Potelwa said unknown gunmen entered the spaza and fired several shots at 7pm.
