GAMBLING has left one punter broke after Argentina suffered a shock defeat by Saudi Arabia in Qatar on Tuesday, 22 November.
According to Daily Mail, TAB, which is a betting company, confirmed that a punter had placed $160 000 (about R2,7 million) on Lionel Messi’s side to get their World Cup campaign off to a strong start in Doha.
It is reported that the over-confident punter watched, with disappointment, as Saudi Arabia trashed Argentina 2 – 1 and lost his eye-watering sum of money.
At odds of R19,26, the bet would have returned him close to R3 million.
The tournament has had shocking results, with the mighty German team shockingly losing to Japan 2 – 1 on Wednesday.
Many people on social media displayed their betting tickets, showing that the matches had cost them money.
NC Problem Gambling administrator Amanda Winters told witn.com that betting could lead to dangerous habits.
“People are losing money, but they are also losing themselves. And, it’s jeopardising their work, ability to pay bills and family,” Winters said.
