A WOMAN was arrested with a hijacked Mercedes Benz and a firearm after a high-speed chase with cops in Gugulethu Saturday, 22 October.
This after law enforcement that was patrolling the area saw a motorist driving recklessly.
They stopped it, but the driver sped off and a chase ensued.
The driver lost control and crashed into a wall in NY84. Two men managed to open the doors of the car and ran away from the scene, leaving a woman behind, who was then arrested by cops.
Cops further found out that the car was hijacked and was also used in a series of armed robberies around Cape Town.
Gugulethu resident, Zizipho Makhonjwa (51), said she heard a loud bang when she was about to sleep. When she checked, she saw cops gathered in her street.
“A Mercedes Benz had crashed into a wall and cops were with a weeping lady in handcuffs. The wall was partially destroyed,” she said.
MMC for Safety and Security, Jean-Pierre Smith, said the incident happened just after 10pm.
“Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) members on patrol in Gugulethu tried to stop a vehicle that was driving recklessly. The Mercedes Benz refused to stop and a high-speed chase ensued before the suspects lost control and smashed into a yard of a residence in NY84. Two male occupants immediately fled the scene while a female occupant was arrested,” said Smith.
He added that a loaded firearm was found in the vehicle. Smith said the vehicle was also suspected to have been involved in a shooting in NY5 on the same day.

“Further enquiries showed the vehicle had been previously hijacked and had been used in a series of armed robberies,” said Smith.
He said the case has been handed over to SAPS and the recovered vehicle and firearm will now undergo a series of forensic testing.
