SHOPPERS were in great shock after making a gruesome discovery in the toilets of a shopping centre on Tuesday, 20 December.
A woman had gone into labour while she was in the toilet of a shopping centre in Sundumbili, KZN and gave birth on her own.
She then allegedly stabbed her newborn baby boy to death.
She was found by paramedics holding her dead baby.
A shopper said someone ran out of the toilet screaming, and called for help.
“An ambulance was called and when they arrived they saw that the little baby had died. And then police came and arrested the mother,” she said.
The shopper said she didn’t understand what had happened to the baby until she was told by other people that the mother allegedly stabbed the baby to death.
“This is very sad. Many people want babies but this woman gives birth and kills it. She should have just had an abortion in her early pregnancy than to carry the baby and then kill it. I’m still shocked,” she said.
IPSS Medical Rescue spokesman Paul Herbst said they received a call after a woman had apparently given birth in the toilets at the centre.
“On arrival of paramedics, a woman was found to be holding the body of a dead baby. On further investigation it was confirmed that the woman had given birth to the baby in the shopping centre toilets but had then apparently stabbed the baby to death with an unknown object,” he said.
KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the Sundumbili police have arrested a 31-year-old woman for murder following an incident in which a newborn baby was found dead in the toilet at a shopping centre.
“She is expected to appear in the Mtunzini Magistrates Court soon,” he said.
He said it is alleged the suspect gave birth and fatally stabbed her newborn baby with a pair of scissors.
