Why North West ANC elective conference not confirmed yet

accreditation

THE much-anticipated ANC North West Elective Conference scheduled for this weekend remained in doubt today, 10 August, with officials locked in meetings and no official accreditation invites sent out.

The province has not held an elective conference since the Provincial Executive Committee was disbanded in 2018.

Several attempts to hold an elective conference has for some reason or the other proved to be futile, but the party was gearing up to finally hold it this weekend.

But by today afternoon, there was no official confirmation whether it will be going ahead.

Some members also said there was no confirmation of a venue yet even though it was set down for Rustenburg.

Daily Sun understands that the conference might be delayed by 40 branch appeals pending from the ANC National Dispute Resolution Committee.

It is also not known whether the province has been given the green light from Luthuli House.

For the conference to go ahead, Treasurer-General Paul Mashatile, who has assumed the duty of secretary-general following the suspension of Ace Magashule and the death of his deputy secretary Jessie Duarte, would have to issue a verification certificate after satisfying himself with the processes followed.

Neither the provincial spokesman Kenny Morolong or interim provincial committee co-ordinator Hlomani Chauke was available to confirm whether the conference would go ahead or be postponed again.

The two were said to be locked in meetings pertaining to the conference.

The conference is expected to be a five-horse race with premier Bushy Maape and former premier Supra Mahumapelo ally and now seen as President Cyril Ramaphosa allyalso vying for the position of provincial ANC chairperson.

The other three contenders are former ANC Youth League leader Kenetswe Mosenogi, finance MEC Matlalepula Rosho and Chauke.

It has not yet emerged who is the clear favourite in the five-horse race as verification of branches is still not complete almost a week before the showdown.

And even the province’s most popular politician Mahumapelo is not tipped as the clear favourite in his bid to revive his political career.

It is also not clear whether the verdicts of branch appeals had been declared yet or whether there has been instructions of a re-run of branch general meetings to elect delegates to the conference, a process that tends be tedious and controversial.

There still exists a possibility that some of the branches could be ordered to have a re-run of bi-annual branch general meetings, which could change the whole complexion of the numbers.

Further more, it is also not known whether the province had reached 70% quorum required by the party’s constitution for a conference to sit.
