KUTLWANO Tshatiwa’s developed an app that helps with medical diagnosis by processing X-ray images.
It also helps to diagnose skin cancer. As a result, the 17-year-old from Madikwe outside Rustenburg, North West, will participate in the International Festival of Engineering Science and Technology in Monastir, Tunisia, from 24 to 30 June.
Officials from Bojanala Platinum District Municipality and Gabonewe High School accompanied Kutlwano to OR Tambo International Airport to send him off.
He said his app could help to determine if one was suffering from pneumonia or skin cancer.
“My dream is to use technology to address health issues and some everyday life challenges,” he said, adding that he was excited.
“I am more focused on doing my best. Winning will be a bonus because I already feel like a winner.”

Kutlwano’s mother, Tebogo, pledged to continue to encourage and support his ambitions and said she was proud of his accomplishments.
The school’s head of department Lekwakwe Nakedi said young people needed to move away from alcohol and drugs.
“We are proud of Kutlwano. He is an example that there are many opportunities for those who wish to achieve big things,” said Nakedi.
Mayor Matlakala Nondzaba said Kutlwano had made them proud.
She urged young people to be inspired by Kutlwano, who also received a tablet with unlimited data to help him with research.
The municipality also helped him with pocket money for the trip.
