KWATHEMA residents in Ekurhuleni have reported a white Nissan Almera which they said is causing havoc in their kasi.

The vehicle is said to be driven by armed robbers who are striking day and night, seizing cellphones, transferring money from banking apps, and stealing valuables.

The frustrated residents said if you dare stand up to the thugs, they threaten to shoot you.

On Wednesday night, 17 January, nine families were robbed. The thugs even went to a night vigil where they robbed mourners of their cellphones.

On Thursday, Daily Sun found angry victims at the KwaThema Police Station, complaining that they've been robbed of cellphones, laptops, money and appliances.

"We are under siege, and we want these thugs behind bars," said one of the victims.

Daily Sun visited the mourning family which was robbed on Wednesday night.

"They found my brother sitting in the garage and took his cellphone," said a woman.

She said they then went inside the house and demanded cellphones from the mourners.

"My aunt told them there was a funeral and they said 'siyazi', meaning we know. They then ordered everyone to take out their cellphones and because they had guns, people complied," said the woman.

Another relative said: "From there they demanded laptops, but we told them we didn't have any. It's a shame that thugs don't respect funerals."

She said the robbers got into a white Nissan Almera and left. They opened a case at KwaThema cop shop.

The then robbers allegedly moved to Duduza, but residents stood up to them and one of the suspects was arrested.

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Nkululeko Magudulela confirmed that one person was arrested in Duduza, with investigations ongoing into the incidents in KwaThema.
