MPUMALANGA: The corruption trial of former minister Bongani Bongo, Robert Burwise, Patrick Chirwa, Harrington Dhlamini, Blessing Singwane, David Dube, Willem Vusi Magagula, Bongani Sibiya, Elmon Mdaka, Sibongile Mdaka and Sandile Nkosi, as well as five companies that are facing 85 charges ranging from fraud, theft, corruption, contravention of Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), will continue in the Nelspruit Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. All the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. The allegations are in connection with a R74 million sale and purchase of farms between 2010 and 2011 by the Department of Human Settlements. Some of the accused, acting in consent with the common purpose, allegedly exploited the normal phenomenon of the purchase of land by the government by misrepresenting facts to the state regarding the ownership and true sale price of the farm.
FREE STATE: Three G4S employees who have been apprehended in connection with Thabo Bester's escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre are expected to make their appearance this afternoon in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court. The trio has been arrested by the police investigating team assigned to the Thabo Bester escape case on Monday, 26 June. Police said the three suspects are the employees of British security company, G4S. The apprehended suspects include two 47-year-old men and the third is a 37-year-old man. One suspect was arrested at his home in Botshabelo while the other two were bust at their place of residence in Bloemfontein. The trio are facing charges of assisting a convicted prisoner to escape from lawful custody, violation of a corpse and corruption. The number of arrested people in the Bester's escape saga has increased to twelve.
NORTH WEST: Caswell Mthombeni (52) will appear in the Mahikeng Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 28 June 2023, facing charges of fraud and money laundering. It is alleged that in October 2015, the suspect was appointed by Department of Community Safety and Transport Management in the North West to help the department in achieving its road safety objectives, which included training of unemployed matriculants and empowering of accredited driving schools in various pilot areas. The suspect’s duties also included training and developing driving schools and learner drivers.
