IT was all systems go this past weekend when ANC Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, officially opened the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) conference at Nasrec on Saturday, 22 July.
The long-awaited conference was expected to elect the league's new leadership after the previous one was disbanded in 2022.
Among those who contested for the ANCWL presidency was former leader, Bathabile Dlamini.
During his opening address, Mbalula gave the women the upper hand, saying they needed to "take control of their leadership and priorities centered on defending women."

On the latest update on the explosion in Johannesburg, Emergency Management Services (EMS) confirmed that they have deployed water tankers and portable toilets to some areas in the CBD that were affected by the gas explosion.
More assessment between Lilian Ngoyi and Loveday Streets confirmed that the structural tunnel integrity is deformed and not stable. As a result of movement of cars crossing towards CJ Cronje Building, the structure might collapse at any point.
EMS urged residents to be cautions and to not interfere with the boundaries or enter condoned off areas for their safety.

Moving to water news, residents in Tshwane can let out a sigh of relief as Rand Water's 30-hour long planned water shutdown for the city has been paused.
The shutdown was expected to take effect from at 5am on Sunday, 30 July until 11am on Monday, 31 July as part of repairs on leaks at its Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant while also replacing defective valves at its Palmiet Booster Station.
However, as of Saturday, 22 July, Rand Water confirmed that the planned shutdown was cancelled and customers would be informed as soon as a decision is taken to continue with the maintenance.

Now moving onto electricity. Aside form load shedding being a burden on Mzansi citizens, news emerged about the arrest of an Eskom project manager, who was arrested by the Mpumalanga Hawks for fraud and corruption.
The official is expected to appear before the Middleburg Special Commercial Crime Court on Monday, 24 July.
More people are expected to face the music in court on Monday with eight officers attached to the police's VIP unit appearing before the Randburg Magistrates Court.
This after the group, who was kept at the Sandton Police Station for alleged assault, was formally charged on Sunday, 23 July.

Meanwhile, a Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) crew was hijacked, kidnapped, assaulted and robbed of their personal cell phones and other working tools while responding to what appeared to be a distress call in Nellmapius, east of Tshwane on Saturday, 22 July.
Police are investigating the matter.
