RESIDENTS in the embattled Emfuleni Municipality are warned not to drink tap water as it's contaminated with sewage.

This after several residents from townships in Emfuleni could smell kak from their taps. Others complained about running stomachs.

The municipality issued a warning to the residents of Beverley Hills, Sonderwater, Graceland, Palm Springs, Lakeside, Zone 3, Zone 6, Zone 7, Zone 8, Small Farms, Evaton, Evaton North and West that the water is still not safe for consumption.

Emfuleni Municipality spokesman, Makhosonke Sangweni said: “The municipality continues to urge affected consumers to avoid using tap water for consumption and to boil it before use. The municipality is waiting for the latest test results on whether the water is now safe for consumption, or not.”

DA Emfuleni Constituency Head, Kingsol Chabalala said the DA is deeply worried that the municipality continues to put residents' lives at risk by failing to replace and maintain the aging water and sewer infrastructure which is prone to breakdowns.

"This has led to possible water contamination. If not properly handled, this could be catastrophic and deadly. As a result, raw sewage flowed into the streams to the Vaal River not only from broken manhole along the stream but also from residential streets, schools, homes and other public areas in the Emfuleni Municipality jurisdiction,” Chabalala said.

“What is also of great concern is the lackluster approach of the municipality in dealing with the impending disaster by failing to ensure proper maintenance sewer pipelines and manholes in the communities. The municipality is quick to waste money recklessly, spend financial resources of the municipality on insignificant things which are no way benefiting the residents of Emfuleni.”
