THE memorial service of the 13 miners who died at Impala mine is underway at Impala sports grounds in Rustenburg, North West.
Thousands of workers arrived to remember their fellow miners.
On Monday evening, 27 November, the conveyance cage that takes workers underground and back to the surface collapsed.

One of the miners, Siyabonga Mvuleni, said it was a dark day for the mine.
He said the tragedy has left all of them heartbroken.
“We are in a sad state as we lost breadwinners. These are people who were working hard for their families.”

Another mine worker, Letlhogonolo Moeketsi, said they never anticipate any danger when they report for work.
“We know it’s a risk working underground, however, our only hope is to return home safe.”
In a statement previously issued, Impala said in line with the Group’s long-running We Care programme, they will provide ongoing support to the families of the deceased and has set aside funds to assist with their funerals.
In addition to standard company funding, the group said it will also financially support the children of late miners from birth until the completion of their tertiary studies.
