FORMER Sowetan journalist and the Eastern Cape National Freedom Party organiser, Nyaniso Mfihlo, has been elected as the national organiser of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
The UDM national executive committee (NEC) held a meeting to fill vacant positions of national office bearers on Saturday, 3 June.
The UDM leader Bantu Holomisa said the NEC pondered the nominations received for the vacant positions.
He said the National General Council (NGC) of 28 April 2023 set in motion a resolution to fill the vacancies and up their game for the 2024 general elections.
"The NEC however considered not only the vacant positions, but also the view of entrenching a youth, gender and skills balance in the UDM’s leadership and keeping in line with the aforementioned mandate of the NGC," said Holomisa.
The party’s former secretary, general Bongani Msomi was elected as national chairman.

The NEC appointed Ndibongo de Villiers as the national elections manager and the national election task team (NETT) established at a later stage.
"Please join us in welcoming our new leaders and sub-committees to the team and wishing them well for their innings. They must hit the ground running to continue our preparation for the 2024 national and provincial elections and national congress," he said.
Holomisa said the UDM also elected members to three sub-committees of the NEC to broaden its impact and draw on a wider pool of human resources.
Those sub-committees include policy and constitutional review, disciplinary and recruitment.
Holomisa said further sub-committees might be established at a later stage by the NEC and/or the national office management committee.
