POLICE in Verulam, KZN on Sunday afternoon received information about suspects carrying firearms at Waterloo.
According to Colonel Thembeka Mbele, the team rushed to the location and a taxi with suspects was spotted on Bat Road in Waterloo.
“When the taxi stopped to drop off passengers, five men alighted from the taxi. Upon seeing the police, the suspects opened fire at them. During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was shot and wounded,” said Mbele.
She said the man was searched and cops found a pistol with ammunition in his possession.
“Another suspect was found in possession of a revolver. Five suspects aged between 21 and 30 were arrested. They will be profiled to establish if they have any links to other serious cases reported in Verulam and surrounding areas,” said Mbele.
The firearms that were seized will be subjected to ballistic testing, and the suspects are expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 22 March.
