A SUSPECT was killed and two escaped following a high-speed chase and shoot-out with cops in Joburg CBD on Monday, 6 June.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said various law enforcement agencies received information about suspects committing armed robberies and car hijackings around the city.

“The team managed to spot the suspects’ vehicle, an Audi A5 with three occupants, in Mayfair at about 2pm.

“The team tried to stop the suspects but they sped off and started shooting at the police and a shoot-out ensued,” Masondo said.

He said two suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot.

“Police continued to chase the suspects’ vehicle until it crashed into an electric pole in Joburg CBD.

“One suspect, with gunshot wounds, was found inside the vehicle. He was later certified dead by the paramedics,” Masondo said.

It was discovered that the vehicle was fitted with false registration plates and it was reportedly hijacked in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, in May.

“An unlicensed firearm and ammunition were found inside the suspects’ vehicle. None of the members of law enforcement agencies or the public was injured.

“Police are searching for suspects that escaped,” Masondo said.
