MAMELODI women are taking matters into their own hands.

After seven-year-old Thagalo Legwai drowned in a local lake while playing with friends, women from different section of ward 15 in Mamelodi, Tshwane decided to do something to stop crimes happening in their area.

Daily Sun published the story on 11 July healined: “Tragedy as little boy (7) drowns ekasi!

The women have formed a neighbourhood watch for women because they don’t want another child to die.

One of the women, Caroline Mlambo, said they started discussing their children’s safety.

“We decided to start this group because there are other crimes happening like house breaking, child abuse and more,” she said.

Caroline said they also have men who help them to patrol at night.

“We work during the day and there are other men in our community who patrol at night,” she said.

She said they also have a problem of nyaope users.

“We are trying to stop these kids from smoking nyaope and we need help taking them to rehab so they can change their lives for the better,” she said.

Irene Mphaga (47) said their group is very helpful.

“Now when some of us are at work, we know that the task team will be taking care of our houses and our kids can now safely play in the street,” she said.

Another member, Leah Mahkangu (55), said their neighbourhood watch is going to make a huge difference.

“During load shedding, it is not safe in the streets, hence we also started this neighbourhood watch. At least now we know that when it's load shedding, we won't worry about being robbed because there are people guarding us in the area,” she said.
