TSHWANE MMC for Roads and Transport Katlego Mathebe has expressed her excitement following the completion of the upgrades on the Glenwood and January Masilela intersection on Monday, 30 October.

She said the project which cost the city R46 million would link up the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system from Menyln to Mamelodi.

This comes after Mathebe hosted a sod turning event for the new A re Yeng Bus line on Lynnwood Road recently.

"The widening of Lynnwood Road is a vital project that intends to alleviate traffic congestion, improve road safety and enhance overall mobility throughout the city. It will play a crucial role in making our city more accessible, safer and environmentally sustainable," she said.

She said it was an 18-month project which would cost R124 million. She said the city would continue to improve roads in Tshwane.

Regarding city bus operations, she said they remained operational amid challenges.

"I'd like to inform commuters and wider public that A Re Yeng and Tshwane Bus Service (TBS) operations remain operational amid challenges. The city will continue to forge ahead with the operations in line with the required and necessary support from the security cluster," she said.

Mathebe said they were facing relentless acts of criminality, and three of their buses were attacked last Monday, 23 October.

"TMPD and SAPS have already arrested four suspects in connection with the attacks," she said.

Resident engineer Gamain Magagula said the challenge was that they needed to build on existing road that had been used and to ensure they accommodated traffic during construction work.

"The project went as planned," he said.

Ward 46 Councilor Pieter van Heerden was happy about the Glenwood and January Masilela intersection completion.

"It did add a lot of value to the environment and to the ward. January Masilela is a busy connection road. This project was run smoothly," he said.

He said it would enhance the running of bus services and help commuters to connect easier from townships to work environments.

Commuter Elizabeth Motale said: "We are happy about the BRT buses because we rely on them. Taxis are a bit expensive. We hope they will continue running smoothly for a long time."
