THE Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Council has just announced the appointment of Dr Gloria Tomatoe Serobe as its new chancellor.
According to the TUT Statute, Dr Serobe will retain this position for the duration of four years from the date of her appointment.
Dr Serobe is a highly accomplished and respected businesswoman and a pioneer in the field of broad-based women's economic empowerment.
She has distinguished herself as one of the most important champions of women's rights through her role as co-founder of Women Investment Portfolio Holdings (Wiphold), the first women's group to be established after 1994 and listed on the Johannesburg Stock
Her social entrepreneurial expertise has been recognised by her election to several non-executive directorships in a number of sectors, including banking, insurance, mining, security and tourism.

In recognition of her effective resource management, President Cyril Ramaphosa selected Dr Serobe in March 2020 to head the Solidarity Fund to support economic recovery, regeneration and revitalisation following the devastating recessionary impact of the Covid-19 epidemic.
Dr Serobe has a BCom degree from the Erstwhile University of Transkei as well as an MBA degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA.
Tshwane University of Technology spokeswoman Phaphama Tshisikawe told Daily Sun that they were honoured to have such a famous South African as the university's leader and chancellor.
"We wish Dr Serobe a prosperous stay as chancellor of this illustrious university," Tshisikawe said.
Professor Tinyiko Maluleka said: "I consider it a great honour that a leader of Dr Serobe's calibre and prominence has consented to serve as the chancellor of the Tshwane University of Technology, as I am currently serving as both principal and vice chancellor."
Dr Serobe sees this position as an additional opportunity to serve her nation and promote the empowerment movement, which has long been a personal passion of hers.
"I'll bring all the university qualifications to this nominal role, which is not an operational one. It is a privilege for me to serve," said Dr Serobe.
