EFF members and residents of Sunnyside in Tshwane said they are tired of crime in and around the Pretoria CBD.

The party led the march on Wednesday, 8 November, in Sunnyside to voice their grievance to Sunnyside Police Station.

Majuda Mauwane, a concerned community leader and EFF chairman in Ward 81 in Sunnyside, said there was a high rate of robbery, gender-based violence and drug issues.

He said this was their first march as a community, and they wanted cops to address crime issues.

"As leaders, we get calls from young people complaining about their safety in Tshwane, especially at night. People are not free to walk at night," he said.

Mauwane said they needed police visibility in crime hotspot areas such as Robert Sobukwe, Troye Street and the Mandela Bridge.

"We are tired of our residents being pointed at with firearms and knives. Some residents lose valuables after being pepper sprayed," he said.

He said cops have told them they lacked manpower and had a shortage of vehicles to patrol at night.

Sunnyside Police Station spokesman Captain Daniel Mavimbela said: "We are happy that you are here. When people visit this police station to voice concerns, we don't regard them as enemies. Your visit is a reminder to each of us to behave during the execution of our duties."

He appealed to residents to not withdraw cases of gender-based violence.
