Truck drivers have left motorists frustrated after blocking the N4 to Mozambique.
Truck drivers have left motorists frustrated after blocking the N4 to Mozambique.

A "WAR" between taxi and truck drivers has left the N4 freeway in chaos.

Trucks congestion at the Lebombo border crossing has been a problem for many years.

On Friday, 17 November, several cars belonging to taxi associations were set on fire allegedly by the truck drivers. Several people were injured. Videos emerged on social media showing trucks blockading the N4 as well as burnt vehicles on the side of the road.

It is alleged that the truck drivers staged a protest on Thursday evening, 16 November, because they were queuing for a long time without being allowed through to Mozambique.

They allegedly blocked the road, leading to the chaos.

A truck driver who had been waiting in the queue since Tuesday, 14 November said he had lost hope.

A truck driver said: "I am frustrated. This has been happening for some time now. The police cannot cope with the situation. I wish a permanent solution can be found to this matter."

Another driver said frustrations had caused a lot of chaos. He said the border administration must do something to avoid further delays.

"We have filed a petition today, and we believe it will be taken care of. The delays frustrate us, so we end up blocking the road to get the attention we need," he said.

Vusi Shongwe, Mpumalanga's MEC for community safety, has condemned the behaviour of truck drivers. He said action would be taken against those who had broken the law.

"The main concern is that there is no congestion, but overall, the problems at the Lebombo require all stakeholders to work together. The truck drivers themselves must join in. We cannot allow lawlessness as we have seen with some truck drivers blocking the road by driving in front of oncoming traffic," he said.
