THE Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has suspended all train services in KZN as heavy rainfall continues to wreak havoc in the province.
On Tuesday, 12 April, Prasa said the decision came after the Cato Ridge line was temporarily closed on Sunday, 10 April, due to the heavy rain that affected the safety of trains running on that line.
“Prasa would like to inform the public that all KZN train services are currently suspended as the lines are unsafe for running trains. The lines are covered by mudslides and some are covered with rubble, which makes it impossible for the safe passage of trains in these affected areas,” it said in a statement.
The rail agency said the decision was made for the safety of commuters as well as Prasa employees.
“Prasa will continue to examine the lines and as soon as they are ready for the safe running of trains, they will be reopened accordingly and the public will be notified.
“Prasa apologises for any inconvenience caused and urges commuters to seek alternative transport where it is safe to travel. We also encourage the public to exercise safety during these adverse weather conditions,” it concluded.
News24 reported that the KZN education department issued a notice to teachers, parents and guardians asking them to use their discretion in whether or not to send children to school due to inclement weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service has also issued a warning that heavy rain, which is expected on Tuesday, 12 April, could result in loss of livestock and flooding of roads and settlements.
