METRORAIL services between Joburg and Germiston remain closed due to a collapsed pedestrian overhead bridge between Jeppe and George Goch stations.
The footbridge collapsed on Wednesday, 4 October onto the train tracks, damaging the overhead traction equipment and injuring two people who were later taken to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for medical assessment.
Gauteng Metrorail has temporarily suspended trains operating between Joburg and Germiston.
According to Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa (Prasa) spokeswoman Andiswa Makanda, Prasa recently recovered the line and were running test trains when the bridge collapsed.
The Germiston to Joburg line is part of the 16 corridors prioritised for rebuilding and recovery in this financial year.
She said the Gauteng infrastructure team is back on site and have started reinstalling the electrical overhead infrastructure.

“This work follows the removal of parts of the bridge and debris from the perway/main tracks. The remaining parts of the bridge and debris will be removed today. The team started the recovery work on Wednesday evening, working into the early hours of Thursday morning, 5 October. We're pleased with the progress made in recovering the infrastructure so we can resume services, which we expect within the next 24 to 48 hours,” said Makanda.
She said that an investigation into the collapse is underway.
Metrorail management wished the injured a speedy recovery and apologised to commuters for the inconvenience this may have cause to their travelling arrangements.
Commuters travelling on the Joburg and Germiston lines are advised to seek alternative transport until further notice.
