METRO cops in Cape Town sent would-be smash-and- grab suspects home empty-handed after receiving a tip-off from members of the public.
The two men were seen attempting to smash car windows on the corner of Prince George Drive and Joe Marks Blvd in Lavender Hill, Cape Town.
Metro cops swiftly went to the area, searched the men and sent them home before they could rob anyone.
MMC for safety and security Jean-Pierre Smith said: “On Monday, 7 November, at 7.24pm, we received information of suspects who had been seen allegedly trying to grab a cellphone through a motorist’s window at the intersections of Prince George Drive and Joe Marks Blvd. Police were alerted and at 7.32pm Metro cops intercepted the suspects at the intersection.”
He said when the cops arrived, the men were still at the spot.

“The duo were questioned and sent on their way after being searched. Again the public must be reminded: keep your valuables out of sight when approaching intersections. Besides it being an offence to handle your phone while driving, when you try to read your messages with your phone on your lap, you are not looking around you and do not see the suspects that run up to your window,” said Smith.
A motorist, who often uses the road, said the corner is a smash-and-grab hot spot. “Every time I pass by, I see glasses from shattered windows on the road surface. I would like for cops to camp there because the crime at that corner is serious,” he said.
