TIMOTHY Chirwa, a motorbike driver who delivers food and groceries, loves his job.

However, the 39-year-old father of three children, aged between nine and 13, from Boksburg, in Ekurhuleni, said he and his colleagues face challenges, and fear being robbed, hijacked and assaulted daily.

He said he prays every morning when he leaves home for work.

"I pray for God's protection on the road as we always fear being robbed and attacked. Thugs target us, especially at night and rob us of everything, including food and cellphones," Timothy said.

He said in 2023 he was hijacked by two armed men who took his motorbike and cellphone in Boksburg.

"They assaulted me, and one of them stabbed me in the back. They took my motorbike, which had a tracker. It was later discovered in Benoni."

Timothy said on Monday, 1 April, he was nearly attacked by two thugs in Boksburg.

"They came out of the bushes at the traffic lights, and as they approached me, two cop vans came from the other side of the road.

"They ran away to the bushes. I was terrified, thinking I'd be robbed and attacked again," he said.

However, despite the many challenges, Timothy won't quit his job.

"There's no way I'd quit. My family will suffer. The little I get, through deliveries, makes a huge difference to me and my family."

Police spokeswoman, Captain Neldah Sekgobela confirmed the incident and said a case of hijacking and robbery was opened last year at the Boksburg North Police station. No one has been arrested.
