THREE men have finally been found guilty of robbery, housebreaking and theft in North West Province, almost eight years after committing the crimes.
Donald Baloyi (30), Collen Lentsoane (28) and Joseph Marutla (44) were sentenced by Potchefstroom Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 3 August.
They were found guilty of robbery with aggravated circumstances, housebreaking and theft for a crime they committed in December 2014.
On the morning of 3 December, the three broke into a house in Ikageng where a husband, his wife and their two daughters were sleeping.
The three threatened the family with guns, took them to the bathroom and tied them up. They then ransacked the house.
They made off with four cellphones, a laptop, jewellery and a gun.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Colonel Adele Myburgh said the men were bust three months after the incident. She said they were mostly held in custody since they were arrested.
“Cases usually take long, because you would find the suspects hire and fire their attorneys to derail the case,” said Myburgh.
Baloyi was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, while Lentsoane and Marutla received 20-year sentences each.
