THUGS armed with AK47s shot and killed a cash van security officer inside a hardware shop.

They also held the staff hostage before getting away with an undisclosed amount of cash, which security guards were collecting at the hardware in Orange Farm, South of Joburg on Wednesday, 11 October.

A security officer was gunned down during the robbery.

Street vendors near the gate of the mini shopping complex told Daily Sun that the men were wearing jackets, going up and down inside the complex using a small gate.

They also said their getaway car was parked next to the gate before they robbed the store.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said Gauteng police on Thursday, 12 October, launched a hunt for armed cash-in-transit robbers who fled with an undisclosed sum of money at a hardware in Orange Farm.

“The two GS4 security personnel were collecting cash at Cash Build Hardware when they were accosted by the suspects,” she said.

Mathe said according to information at the police's disposal, one of the security guards went inside the business premises to collect cash and was pointed with a firearm by the suspect inside the building.

“During the brawl, the suspect fatally shot the security guard three times, in the leg, left arm and in the head.

"There was also another suspect outside the building keeping observations and armed with an AK-47 rifle, and the suspect started firing at the driver’s window side," she said.

Mathe said the driver was not injured and managed to drive from the scene towards the Grasmere toll gate.

She said police found eight AK47 cartridges and three 9mm cartridges at the crime scene.

Mathe said that the suspects were found to have fled the scene in a white VW polo sedan with no registration number, adding that CCTV camera footage would assist police in the investigations.

She said police have opened a murder case, robbery and attempted murder for further investigation.

Mathe urged community members to work with the police in dealing with crime by reporting criminal activities and coming forward with any information that can assist with the investigations.
