accreditation

COPS in the Free State have launched a manhunt after mine security officers were robbed of two firearms.

This follows a shoot-out at Harmony Central Plant Mine near Virginia, in the Free State, on Tuesday, 5 April, at about 11.30pm

According to Captain Stephen Thakeng, seven armed robbers attempted to hijack a Toyota Quantum driven by security personnel while patrolling.

There were a number of security personnel inside the vehicle. While officers were busy patrolling the mine premises, they were attacked by unknown suspects.

“A shoot-out ensued between them and the suspects,” Thakeng said.

He said no one was injured during the shooting.

“The suspects managed to rob the security officers of a rifle and a 9mm pistol. They drove off in unknown vehicles,” Thakeng added.

Anyone with information that can help the police arrest these armed robbers is urged to call Warrant Officer Jaco van Rensburg on 083 697 6323 or call CrimeStop on 08600 10111.
