MPUMALANGA cops have arrested two suspected thugs who fired shots at the police at Tekamahala near Calcutta in Bushbuckridge on Sunday evening, 27 March.
According to Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the police received information at about 7pm of a robbery being planned at Sizanani Shopping Centre.
The cops went to the scene and spotted the suspected robbers in a gold Toyota Avanza.
Mohlala said: “The suspects began firing shots when they saw the men and women in blue and tried to flee. Police shot back to defend themselves while also giving chase.
“to the vehicle driven by suspects.The suspects were cornered after their vehicle came to a halt. Their wheel got damaged in the crossfire,”
A firearm was found inside the Avanza and two suspects aged 24 and 26 were arrested.
“Both suspects sustained serious injuries on their lower bodies during the shootout with police.
“They are receiving medical treatment. The seized firearm will undergo forensic tests. Police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges to the suspects’ case.
“Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate will conduct its own investigation into the incident,” said Mohlala.
The suspects are expected to appear in Mkhuhlu Magistrates Court soon facing a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
