POLICE in Sophiatown arrested three illegal miners and seized an AK-47 rifle with ammunition on Friday, 23 September.

Colonel Dimakatso Sello said the arrests were made in a continued effort to disrupt illegal mining activities and fight the proliferation of illegal firearms.

She said police in Sophiatown and Langlaagte received information about heavily armed men conducting illegal mining activities in Bosmont.

“This is the area where six bodies of suspected illegal miners were found about two weeks ago. The operation, under the Command of the Station Commander of Sophiatown, Brigadier Bonginkosi Ndebele, led to the arrest of three men and the recovery of one rifle,” Sello said.

She said police will continue to strengthen efforts to fight crime through various crime prevention operations. Members of the public are also urged to report any criminal activities on the Crime Stop Line 08600 10111.
