THREE suspects linked to the mass shooting in Savannah Park, Durban, have been arrested.
The trio were arrested just a few days after the tragic shooting, which claimed seven lives, three of which were from the same family.
Following this, the eThekwini mayor urged residents to work with cops to prevent mass killings.
Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda led a delegation from the city, parliament, religious sector and various community structures to Savannah Park on Monday, 1 August, following the mass killings in the area.
The delegation visited three families to convey their condolences and offer support to the grieving families who lost family members.
Kaunda also applauded the police for the swift arrest of three suspects alleged to be linked to the shootings.
“As the eThekwini Municipality leadership, we have been liaising with the affected families on the type of support needed during this difficult time,” he said.
He emphasised the need for communities to work closely with police to root out crime.
“We condemn these barbaric acts of mass shootings, and we call for the revival and strengthening of active crime-fighting community structures,” he said.
He said crime combating strategies must be intensified to assist with early detection of crime.
Seven people were shot dead at a spaza shop on Saturday night, 30 July. This mass shooting followed the one in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg, last month where 12 people were shot and four died.
KZN police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker said three men, aged between 22 and 31, were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms.
“They were found in possession of two pistols, a rifle and 49 rounds of ammunition. They are expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrates Court soon,” said Naicker.
