CAPE Town MMC for Human Settlements Malusi Booi has condemned residents who are illegally occupying RDP houses.

Booi said people were occupying homes being constructed for the Gugulethu Infill Housing Project before they were completed.

Housing beneficiaries told Daily Sun it pained them to see people illegally occupying homes meant for them.

Nosiphiwo Magwaza (46) said: “We know the rightful owners of these houses, know their house numbers.

“They are just waiting for the project to be completed, but people who are not on the list are occupying houses.

“We are angry because we have been waiting for a long time to get these homes, but some people just jumped the queue.”

Booi said the municipality will do everything in its power to ensure the project was protected and beneficiaries received their homes.

He said the project stretched over two sites in Guguletu and Mau Mau in Nyanga.

Last month, beneficiaries started getting homes.

Booi said: “We are pleased to see the construction making big strides, and we’ree happy to see that our beneficiaries have already received their units, enjoying their new homes.

“Over the coming weeks and months, the city will be handing over more homes to beneficiaries.

“We thank our teams and contractors for their hard work and dedication, so far.”

Some residents occupied unfinished houses in May.

A resident said: “We see the government is not doing enough to complete projects, so we complete them ourselves to have proper homes.”

Living in a shack is not easy.”
