THENJIWE Nxumalo is keeping gogos and mkhulus from Slovo fit and active.

She has devoted her time to assisting the elderly and people living with disabilities in Slovo, Soweto. Not only does she offer exercise classes, but she also runs a feeding scheme.

Nxumalo is among the unsung heroes being spotlighted this Nelson Mandela Month.

She said it all began in August 2002.

"I saw the need among grannies raising children. The grannies don't use their money on themselves. They spend it on their grandchildren, and that's what motivated me," she said.
