THE body of a 51-year-old part-time fisherman, Sipho Tibani was found on Tuesday, 9 January.

Sipho from Mpheni D2 in Limpopo, who was allegedly killed by a crocodile, was found trapped in the reeds of the dam after a two-day search in Nesengani, just before the Albasini Dam.

Local residents watched in disbelief as the deceased's body was being retrieved by the police search and rescue team.

It's alleged that Sipho, a native of Mozambique, was dragged away by a crocodile and disappeared while he was with his two friends.

His older brother Amos Tibani told Daily Sun they were heartbroken.

"We are still trying to get over his death. It's a small consolation that he was finally found after the incident happened on Sunday, 7 January," he said.

Amos said he heard from Sipho's friends that his brother was looking for a good spot for his fishing nets when the incident happened.

One of his friends told Daily Sun that Sipho was only a few metres away from them when they heard him shouting the F-word.

"We tried to call him, but he didn’t respond. It's sad that we did not know something like this could happen," Amos said.

ANC PR councillor Walter Mabasa sent his condolences to the family of the deceased.

"We advise our people not to go to the dam to fish because crocodiles are dangerous," he said.

Vhembe police spokesman Sergeant Vuledzani Dathi confirmed the incident and said Makhado police had opened an investigation file.

Then on Tuesday 9 January, the body was seen floating on the water and was later retrieved from the water by the police. According to Dathi, the body was thoroughly scrutinised, and it was in a state of decomposition, but deep bite wounds were noticed on both legs.

"On Tuesday, 9 January, the body was seen floating on the water and was later retrieved from the water by the police," he said.

"The body was taken to the local government mortuary for a post-mortem and further police investigation," Dathi said.
