FOR many years Mbilwi Secondary School in Sibasa was the shinning star of Limpopo.

The school produced excellent matric results year after year.

But a dark cloud is now hanging over the school.

Last month it made headlines when Lufuno Mavhunga committed suicide after she was bullied by a fellow pupil.

Recently, on Friday, 14 May, a teacher was arrested for allegedly raping a Grade 12 pupil on several occasions in 2018.

The teacher allegedly raped the victim twice at a lodge after he lured her there under the pretence of giving her extra lessons.

Her allegedly also raped her at his house.

A rape case was only opened last month with the help of the Human Rights Commission.

Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said in one of the incidents the teacher reportedly offered to help the pupil with extra lessons, but instead took her to a lodge where he allegedly raped her.

“The suspect thereafter threatened the girl and offered her money to keep her silent.

“The girl eventually opened a case at Thohoyandou Police Station last month and the suspect was arrested.”

The teacher is expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrates Court on Monday, 17 May.

Meanwhile, Limpopo Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya condemned the incident.

She encouraged other victims to break their silence.

“I’m saddened to learn of the alleged rape by a teacher, someone we entrusted with the safety and future of our children,” said Lerule-Ramakhanya.

“I know it took long for the victim to have the courage to speak out.

“But she’ll soon find justice and heal from the awful experience.”
