COPS were booking the two taximen – but when they looked up about 40 taxi drivers stormed into the police station.

They came to free the arrested men!

Cops from the Philippi East cop shop in Cape Town bust the driver for fraudulent documents and when the owner came to the cop shop, he was also arrested.

There were two detectives and two traffic cops in the office when the group arrived. An argument ensued and the group grabbed and freed the two suspects before fleeing. MMC for Safety and Security Jean-Pierre Smith said last Thursday the driver of a Toyota Avanza taxi was bust for producing false documents. The suspect was taken to Philippi East Police Station. When the owner arrived he admitted the licence plates and disc were from another vehicle.

He was arrested for allowing the driver to operate the vehicle with fraudulent documents.

Smith said the owner contacted his wife to collect their possessions, but that’s when the 40 taxi drivers and owners stormed the police station.

Police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that about 40 members of a taxi association stormed a room at Philippi East cop shop and overpowered traffic officials. “The men took the suspects and left. Aiding an escape case was opened for investigation. The suspects are yet to be arrested.”

Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association spokesman Nkululeko Sityebi confirmed the incident yesterday, but didn’t elaborate. “We are aware of the incident that took place at the cop shop last week,” he said.
