A female student from the University of the Western Cape was injured during a taxi robbery last month.

TWO university students are lucky to be alive after they were robbed and assaulted by a taxi driver.

The 21-year-old student and her 23 year-old cousin from the University of the Western Cape took a taxi from their student residence in Belhar to Sanlam Centre in Parow on 30 April.

On De La Rey Road, the taxi turned and drove off in a different direction.

“Suddenly, a guy stood up from the back seat and told us to hand over our phones,” said the young woman.

One of them was hit on the head with a beer bottle when she tried to resist. “They ordered us to open our bank apps and send some cash to a phone number they gave us,” she said.

“They said if we make any moves that make people suspicious they will kill us,” said the student.

After being threatened to be killed, the students transferred R3 000 andR2 000 respectively.

The students, who were later dropped off at a quiet spot, managed to memorise the taxi’s number plate. Cop spokesman
