WITHIN 15 minutes of Progress Machokoto (33) leaving her shack to go to work on Monday, 10 October, she got a call telling her to come back home.
Her shack at Jeffsville in Atteridgeville, Tshwane, was on fire.
Progress said she doesn’t know what caused the fire.because her shack was locked.
She said the worst thing is that she had left R1 000 of stokvel money in the shack and now the money was also burnt.
She said: “I don’t know how I’m going to explain that to the members.I guess I have no choice but to raise the money and pay it back.”
She said this was the first time her shack had burnt down.
The mother of three said that she lost her fridge, beds, tables, chairs, clothes, blankets, food and documents.
“I don’t know where to start becauseWe’re left with nothing,” she said.
“I need help for my kids. I need food and clothes. We need all the help we can get.”
Progress, her husband and their children are now homeless.

Neighbour Gift Sithole (32) said: that he still can’t believe that his neighbours are homeless.“We tried our best to put out the fire, but we suspect the gas bottles caused the fire to spread quickly.”
Community leader Johannes Nkoana (40) said he hoped Progress could get a new shack, food and other things she lost in the fire.
“This is bad,” he said.
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesman Charles Mabaso said: “The family should talk to the ward councillor and ask for social development officers to intervene.”
