EASTERN Cape thugs are now targeting freedom fighters' graves.

Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) woke up to the news that Steve Biko's grave had been vandalised over the weekend.

The grave is at the Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance in Ginsberg, eQonce in the Eastern Cape

The damage to Steve Biko's tombstone, which was unveiled in 2017, came after the vandalism of Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) hero, Robert Sobukwe's grave at Sobukwe gravesite at the Santaville in Graaff Reinet, also in the Eastern Cape.

Azapo spokesman Jabu Rakwena said: “Azapo is saddened by the thuggery and the vandalism of Biko tombstone and stealing of bronze fists attached to it. The family was alerted of the vandalism, by the COO of the Steve Biko Foundation, Bruce Waters.

“Both Steve Biko’s tombstone and the Biko house are recognised national sites, by the South African Heritage Resources Agency."

Rakwena questioned the apparent lack of maintenance and security provided by the Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) for such significant historical landmarks.

“We asked ourselves that it could be that the BCM neither recognises nor cares about this great giant and the heritage he bequeathed to us. Could it also be that the pivotal role played by Biko, and sacrifices made to the people of Azania with his life are insignificant to them?” he said.

Azapo called on the municipality to take immediate action by fencing off the entire precinct and providing adequate security. Additionally, they urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation to arrest the perpetrators.

Attempts to get comments from the Buffalo City municipal spokesman Samkelo Ngwenya were fruitless. His phone rang answered countless times and WhatsApp message sent to him for comment were neither acknowledged nor responded to at the time of publishing.
