THE Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Bloemfontein, Free State, has pleaded with the public to surrender all dogs that pose danger to the community.

This after a pit bull mauled an eight-year-old boy to death at his home in Vista Park, Bloemfontein at the weekend.

According to police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane, the dog escaped its enclosure and jumped over the fence into the neighbour’s premises and attacked Olebogeng Mosime (8), who was playing alone, biting him severely on the neck and chest.

SPCA Free State inspector Warner Botha said the loss of a child is something that no parent has to endure.

Botha confirmed that the SPCA in Free State stands in solidarity with Sizwe Kupelo Foundation on its call to ban pit bulls and said it’s for the protection of the people, especially the vulnerable who are the most common victims of dog attacks.

He welcomed the petition that says pit bulls must be contracted or sterilised.

“It appears outrageous especially to pit bull owners. However, upon careful reflection, the petition advocates for the protection of people and responsible pet ownership.

“The petition also calls for stronger regulations for keeping pit bulls and other power breeds,” he said.

The SPCA confirmed it will make collection services available to any owner who doesn’t have the means to take aggressive animals to its offices.
