MATSELISO Secondary School in Meadowlands, Soweto celebrated Heritage Month in style on Saturday, 23 Septemebr.

The celebration coincided with the school's 34 years anniversary.

Retired teachers, pupils and former pupils flocked to the high school in Ndofaya to celebrate the anniversary and to honour the ex-principals for their great service to Matseliso.

The event was filled with different activities such as dance and pupils showing off their different traditional attires.

Ngobakazi Somniso Javu, a teacher at the school, told Daily Sun that Matseliso is one of the top perfoming schools in the area and their matric results bear testimony to that, adding that they're a committed and ambitious team that takes the education of an African child seriously.

“I am one of the people who organised this event because we are celebrating 34 years of existence and unveiling our new emblem. As a school, we have grown so much and we are very rich in culture. That's why a part of the event is to celebrate heritage,” said the teacher.

Ngobakazi said there were many changes that they had to make along the way to ensure they did not disappoint.

"We send forth our special gratitude to Khaabo Tombstones, who donated the granite plaques. These plaques will remain for many years. They will speak volume about these great leaders forever,” said the teacher.

Speaking to Daily Sun, resident Raymond Nxumalo said it was also important that they unveiled the granite plaques dedicated to the two former principals of the school.

The two former school principals, Josiah Rooi and Mokete Ntsamai, were overwhelmed by gratitude.

They said they were speechless, thankful and proud that the school has remembered them.

Giving back to the community, musician Muziwakhe Mazibuko (19), famously known as Pushkin, wowed pupils and guests with his performance at the school event.

Some pupils said they attended the event just to see Pushkin's performance.

“Through my performance, I am giving back to the community since I never got a chance to perform at schools. I mostly performing at events at night. This is a beautiful experience for me," said Pushkin.
