RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin must never think of setting foot in Mzansi.

The Pretoria High Court issued an order on Friday, 21 July after the South African government agreed to arrest Putin if he comes to Mzansi.

The order reads: ”The third Responded (justice and constitutional development director general) on 29 June 2023, signed a letter forwarding the ICC’s request for cooperation to the National Director for Public Prosecutions (NDPP) to apply for an arrest warrant for President Putin in terms of section 9(1) of the Implementation of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court Act of 2002, which was sent to the NDPP by his office on 17 July 2023.”

The order comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Wednesday, 19 July, that the Russian president was no longer attending the BRICS summit which will be hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre in Joburg, Gauteng next month.

The DA approached the court to get an order forcing the government to arrest Putin.

After all parties agreed not to proceed with the case, the order was granted.

DA leader John Steenhuisen said the ruling was a victory for his party.

“This DA victory will hopefully begin to restore our country’s global standing and avert looming economic catastrophes like potential sanctions and ejection from AGOA (The African Growth and Opportunity Act),” said Steenhuisen.

He accused Ramaphosa of trying to shield Putin by claiming that the Constitution somehow prohibited him from complying with the ICC directive.

Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the summit, which will also be attended by Brazil, India and China.
