Some residents in Tshwane feel former President Jacob Zuma should go back to jail.

THE Constitutional Court ruled against former President Jacob Zuma on Thursday, 13 July.

This after the court rejected an application to overturn the Supreme Court of Appeals ruling on Zuma's parole.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison in July 2021 for refusing to comply with a request to appear before the Zondo Commission.

But some residents in Tshwane want him to return to prison and finish his sentence.

Phillip Thole (45) from Thambo Ville in Hammanskraal, Tshwane said the court ruling was right in that Zuma must go back and complete his sentence.

He also said that the age issue should be put aside and there must not be a presidential pardon because it's a judiciary matter.

He said:

This will not show good precedence to other politicians who will also want to get pardoned. Zuma must serve the sentence.

David Mathekga (42) from Kekana, also in Hammanskraal, said no one is above the law and politicians must serve sentences like other people and not be favoured because of their power and money.

"Zuma is not special. He committed a crime. ConCourt judgments must be followed," he said.

David said the 2021 July unrest will not happen even if Zuma goes back to prison. He appealed to the country's intelligence to be on high alert regarding this matter.

According to the movement, Defend our Democracy, the ConCourt ruling of Zuma's medical parole must be respected.

Chairman of the National Committee of Defend our Democracy, Reverend Moss Ntlha, reiterated their position before the Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma in 2021.

He said at the time, they pledged to respect and uphold the decision of the Constitutional Court in relation to Zuma's case regardless of its outcome.

"We recorded our commitment to the Constitution and the most basic concept of democracy and the rule of law that all are equal before the law, even the powerful," he said.

Ntlha also said they reiterate their call to organisations across the country to communicate to constituencies that the Constitutional Court ruling should be accepted and respected.

"Speak out against any unwarranted attacks on the judiciary and stand firmly against any group or individual attempting to destabilise our democracy in objecting to the ruling of the Constitutional Court," he said.

He said as they wait the commissioner's decision, they urge all parties involved in the matter to place the protection of the rule of law and the Constitution at the forefront of decision-making.
