THE suspects seen in a video that went viral assaulting a man, demanding his banking app pin while pointing a gun at him have been arrested in Protea Glen, Soweto.
They were arrested by the JMPD tactical response unit.
In the video, the victim can be seen lying on the floor, assaulted by the suspects while demanding his PIN. The man helplessly calls out his PIN while a man who is recording the video is heard saying, "Don't give it to them, they won't shoot you, I phoned the police".
The suspects continued to point a firearm at the suspect, who was helpless on the floor. He begged the suspects to give him his phone so that he could unlock his banking app using his face.
The six suspects were arrested on Saturday, 2 December. The six are said to be suspects who were wanted for murder and robbery. They were arrested in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
They are linked to multiple cases of robberies and murders in Westbury and Eldorado Park.
According to JMPD spokesman Superintendent Xolani Fihla on Saturday, 2 December, cops received information about suspects who are involved in gang shootings in Westbury, Bosmont and Eldorado Park.
"Videos were circulating on social media where the suspects were allegedly boasting about the killing of a known gang and drug lord. Some of the suspects were positively identified on a video where they were robbing and assaulting a man. The operational team followed up on the information, which led them to a suspect's hideout in Soweto," said Fihla.
He said that the house was tactically approached, and six men were arrested. Upon searching the men, two unlicenced firearms were found in their possession.
Fihla said that the officers conducted an inquiry into the firearms recovered, and it was discovered that one firearm was reported robbed from the owner as per an Eldorado Park SAPS case, and it was further discovered that the owner of the second firearm was killed.
The six suspects were arrested, and a case for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition was opened at the Protea Glen cop shop.
"Two underage females were found in one of the bedrooms on the premises. They were released to the custody of their parents," Fihla said.
JMPD acting Chief of Police Angie Mokasi commended the cops for their successful arrest.
