Shoplifting cop in hot water!

A JOHANNESBURG Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) cop has been suspended for stealing.

The officer was caught on CCTV camera allegedly shoplifting at a Clicks store in Jewel City, Maboneng.

A joint statement by Mayor Dr Mpho Phalatse and Public Safety MMC David Tembe on Friday, 22 July, said she was made aware of the footage on Thursday.

“I contacted the store management and requested the video footage to assist the o identify the officer,” said Phalatse.

She added that JMPD conducted its own preliminary investigation and identified the officer, who has since been suspended.

Phalatse said she also encouraged the store management to open criminal charges against the officer.

Tembe said in an effort to clean up JMPD and restore its image, six officers have been dismissed for various offices in the past few months. He gave a stern warning to other officials to refrain from breaking the law.

“There is no space for criminal elements in the JMPD. Let this serve as a strong warning to bad elements that exist across city departments and entities. Regardless of who you are, you will be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.
