A 32-YEAR-OLD man believed to be involved in the death of a police sergeant was gunned down during a shoot-out with the police at a complex in Brits, North West on Saturday, 24 June.
According to Hawks spokeswoman, Colonel Katlego Mogale, a multidisciplinary operation was performed when the team which included Crime Intelligence, Hawks' Tactical Operations Management Section, Gauteng traffic's Saturation Unit SAPS Highway Patrol, SAPS Ekurhuleni District Operational Trio Task team, Tracker Connect, Badboyz Security, Protego Security and FRS-Falcon Risk Solutions followed up on information about a suspect who was allegedly involved in the brutal murder of Sergeant Leka Maja in Mamelodi, Tshwane a week ago.
She said upon arrival at the identified address, the team was met with gunfire and a shoot-out ensued where the suspect was fatally wounded.
“A search of the premises was conducted and an unlicensed handgun and rifle were recovered,” she said.
Meanwhile, a 40-year-old suspect was arrested by Secunda based Serious Organised Crime Investigation on Friday, 23 June in connection with the murder of Sergeant Hlatshwayo who was stationed at Mahamba border posts.

It was reported that an off-duty sergeant was shot at his home in Piet Retief in February 2023.
Mogale said the sergeant managed to call his friend who then rushed him to a local hospital where he was later transferred to Trichardt Medi-Clinic for further medical treatment, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“Three suspects including the late sergeant’s wife were later arrested by Secunda Serious Organised Crime Investigation. Through further investigation, it was detected that the late sergeant's wife was in contact with a man from Ermelo and it was also discovered that the suspect's motor vehicle was used when the sergeant was shot.”
“The suspect was then traced and found at Ermelo hospital admitted with gunshot wounds,” said Mogale.
She added that the suspect was arrested and placed under police guard. "His cellphone was seized for further investigation and he's expected to appear in court once he has recovered," she said.
