A POLICE detective was on his way to work on Friday, 30 June when he spotted three vehicles with six occupants at Mooifontein Cemetery in Norkempark, Ekurhuleni.
According to police spokeswoman Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the detective then asked for back-up from his office and patrol vehicle.
“When they approached the vehicles, they drove into different directions. A shoot-out ensued between the suspects and cops and one suspect was injured,” she said.
Sekgobela said an unlicensed firearm with six live ammunition was found in the suspect’s possession.
She told Daily Sun that that a Toyota Corolla and Audi, which were allegedly used in the commission of a business robbery in Kempton Park earlier that day, were also recovered.

Meanwhile, Sekgobela said cops had operations in Ekurhuleni policing precincts from Friday, 30 June to Sunday, 2 July, where they arrested 261 suspects for various crimes.
She said 10 illegal liquor outlets were closed during the operations.
“A total of 145 suspects were arrested by detectives in the district while tracing suspects during their operations, while others were arrested during high density operations which were conducted by stations within the district,” she said.
She said in the Katlehong north area, a suspect (25) was arrested by cops and members of Thatha Zonke Security Company on Friday after the police received a tip-off from a concerned resident.
She said the suspect was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Ekurhuleni district commissioner, Major-General Anna Sithole commended officers for their efforts in putting the safety of citizens first and ensuring that unlicensed firearms are removed from the area.
