AN alleged corrupt cop was shot at by police while taking tjotjo of R500 000.
Now the police are investigating a case of corruption as well as an additional charge of attempted murder.
This after the suspect (45), who is a warrant officer, was involved in a shoot-out with police officers from the National Anti-Corruption and Intervention Unit in Highveld Park near Emalahleni.
The officer was allegedly collecting the bribe from a victim when the shoot-out ensued.
The drama unfolded on Tuesday, 2 August evening.
Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said: “An undercover operation was set up by the unit. At about 10.25pm, the member, who is attached to the Organised Crime at head office, called the complainant and demanded cash for clinching a deal in the coal mine around Witbank area. It is further said that the cash was dropped off at a particular house and thereafter the member is said to have collected the it and left in a white Nissan NP300 bakkie.”

He said members who were on the covert operation tried to stop the vehicle driven by the suspect, but he responded by firing shots at the members who also returned fire.
“The suspect was reportedly shot and sustained some injuries. He was then arrested but taken to hospital where he is under police guard. The police managed to also recover an undisclosed amount of cash at the scene. The suspect is expected to appear in the Emalahleni Magistrates Court soon,” he said.
Mpumalanga police commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela has applauded the members for the arrest while condemning acts of criminality committed by members of the service.
“We can never allow a situation where members involve themselves in criminality. Internal investigations should also follow,” she said.
