Senzo Meyiwa’s murder trial begins

accreditation

THE much-awaited murder trial of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, will start today (11 April).

Five men accused of the murder that shocked Mzansi will appear in the North Gauteng High Court in Tshwane to answer to charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Senzo was shot and killed in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, when he was visiting his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in October 2014.

In their last court appearance on 17 March, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya (35), Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi (30), Mthobisi Prince Mncube (37) and Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa (36) claimed they were falsely accused.

Sifisokuhle Ntuli (35) was not in court, because the purpose of the proceedings was for the four men to confirm they had appointed Advocate Malesela Teffo to represent them.

Ntuli is represented by another lawyer.

Teffo told the court that two criminal cases were opened for Senzo’s murder, but the accused were arrested only in one case.

He said seven other people were identified as suspects in the second case, but had not yet been arrested.

Teffo said the rights of his clients had been violated because the state had not managed to prosecute them for seven years.

All the accused are currently serving jail sentences for other crimes.
