THE Sedibeng District Municipality’s expensive mayoral chain is missing without a trace, and it took five months before it was reported to the police.
Democratic Alliance Emfuleni Constituency Head Kingsol Chabalala said his party wants to investigate the missing mayoral chain belonging to the Sedibeng Municipality executive mayor, Lerato Maloka.
Chabalala said the DA demands that the Gauteng MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Mzi Khumalo, launch an urgent investigation into the missing mayoral chain belonging to the Executive Mayor of Sedibeng Councillor Lerato Maloka.
According to Chabalala, the DA has seen an affidavit that states that the chain is valued at R465 000, and it mysteriously disappeared after the State of the District Address on 23 June 2023.
Chabalala said a case of the missing chain was not reported. It was only reported in November 2023.
He said the matter raises suspicions about why the missing chain was not immediately reported to the police.
“It is strange that Mayor Maloka is at the centre of the missing mayoral chain case since she is also embroiled in another shocking case of a foreign substance that was recently found in the engine of the vehicle assigned to her by the municipality.

“We demand that MEC Khumalo to conduct a thorough investigation into the two cases and ensure that those implicated in criminal or negligent behavior are held responsible for their actions,” said Chabalala.
“Mishandling and mismanagement of state resources should not be tolerated, and municipalities should ensure that all public assets are safeguarded and managed with care. In the event of theft or asset damage, municipalities should be transparent and inform the public, as that will increase public trust and ensure that those responsible are held to account.
Vereeniging police spokesman, Captain Fikile Funda, said police are investigating a case of a missing mayoral chain and that the investigations are continuing.
Daily Sun contacted the Mayoral office about the missing chain but with no luck, as no comment was received before the publishing.
