A seal was euthanised due to heavy injuries.

FOUR people were bust for attacking a seal on Sunday, 8 January.

When they were questioned about the attack, they claimed they were sent by a sangoma to kill the seal and hand it over to him.

The four men told SPCA officials that they were promised R3 000 by the sangoma for a dead seal.

Although the SPCA and law enforcement stopped the attack, the seal was already severely injured.

SPCA spokesman, chief inspector Jaco Pieterse, said they rushed the seal to a veterinarian for medical attention, but it was euthanised (put to death) due to heavy injuries.

Pieterse said charges of animal cruelty have been laid at Harare SAPS in Khayelitsha.

“We will ensure justice is served. Torturing any animal is unacceptable and the suspects must face the full might of the law,” said Pieterse.

MMC for Spatial Planning and Environment, Eddie Andrews, condemned the incident.

“This is one of the most brutal attacks on our wildlife in recent times. One cannot fathom the pain and stress the seal had to endure while this was happening. I am shocked and horrified and call on the public to please keep on notifying us when they see animals being attacked, harmed or in distress,” Andrews said.

Sangoma Phindile “Gilindonda” Mtonga told Daily Sun that izangoma use seals to heal people.
